Spanish MEP Christine Gutierrez-Cortines has been visiting the UK to see the good work UK farmers and growers are doing to maintain and enhance their soils. The report author for the planned Soils Directive will play a key role in influencing the European Parliament Environment Committee on the Commission’s draft proposals. Last week, Mrs Gutierrez-Cortines was in Cambridgeshire to meet NFU East Anglia member Philip Bradshaw who highlighted the significant benefits that are being delivered through shifts in technology and advances in machinery. He also spoke about the CAP reform cross compliance measures which require farmers and growers to adhere to soil standards and keep their land in good agricultural and environmental condition as well as the targeted use he’s making of agri-environment scheme options to protect soil on his fenland farm. NFU Deputy President Meurig Raymond said: “The NFU is unconvinced about the need for an EU Soils Directive above and beyond the measures in place and the many activities farmers are already undertaking as part of good practice. “Negotiations are at a critical stage in Europe. The recent vote in the European Parliament offered some useful and much needed clarity to the text but we still have a number of concerns that the proposed Directive is still a long way from what we would consider to be workable and practical. “The Environment Council meeting on December 20th is the next key stage in the process and our efforts are concentrated on continuing to influence prior to that meeting.” -ends-
