£10k donation boosts Africa 100 appeal

17 Dec 2008

Industry-wide fundraiser the Africa 100 Appeal received a boost this week with two donations totalling £10,000.

Leading high street store Marks & Spencer joins a growing number of donors to support the appeal with a £5,000 donation and Strutt and Parker Farms has also generously donated £5,000.

Commenting on the donation, head of corporate social responsibility at M&S, Mike Barry, said: “We recognise the challenges faced by farmers in East Africa and are very keen to support the NFU in its efforts to help farmers increase productivity and supply more food to their local communities.”

David Nutting, chairman of Strutt and Parker Farms, added: “We benefit from progressive technology so we wanted to give something to help those farmers in East Africa who are less fortunate. I would encourage farmers and growers to make a donation, no matter how big or small; it all helps make a difference.”

The NFU launched the Africa 100 appeal with FARM-Africa in July as part of its centenary celebrations. The aim of the appeal is to increase food production for small-scale farming communities in East Africa. Donations are used to fund projects using innovative, but proven, on-farm technologies to help produce more food. It is hoped by backing farmers now future generations will be able to grow sufficient food for themselves, and achieve a small income to pay for medical and education costs.

Leading the Africa 100 appeal is NFU head of communications Sarah Whitelock. She said: “I have been to see some of the projects that are already being supported by FARM-Africa and I am more convinced than ever of the value and longevity of the work being achieved.
“M&S has demonstrated the strength that retailers can add by backing Africa 100 and Strutt and Parker Farms, a very valued member, shows the importance of donating and getting behind this appeal.”
