NFU Deputy President Meurig Raymond will take the Why Science Matters campaign to Europe this week, for a series of cross-party briefings with Euro-MPs. As NFU members are increasingly concerned about the role of the EU in pesticides legislation and sheep EID, Mr. Raymond will push for policies of sound, safe and workable science. The meetings will take place at the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday December 9, for which key MEPs will gather to discuss the future of farming policy in the EU and how this ties in to research and development. “In the 21st century, we need to embrace science, research and technology more than ever before to produce more food, fuel and fibre at the same time as delivering environmental goods”, said Mr Raymond. “We must make sure that sound science is the basis of any policy in Europe and we have seen from discussions on pesticides and sheep identification that this is not always the case. “A strong commitment to research and development at a European level is essential to ensuring workable policy.” -ends-
