There is nothing better for a great Christmas dinner than a locally produced British turkey and locally grown seasonal vegetables – that’s the message the NFU will be taking to this year’s BBC Good Food Show. The show, which takes place at Birmingham’s NEC from November 25 to 29, will see the NFU making visitors aware of the range of high quality local ingredients available to make this year’s Christmas dinner one to remember. Growers will be on hand giving away locally grown fruit and seasonal vegetables and turkey farmer, and world record holder, Paul Kelly will give a turkey carving demonstration. Visitors to the stand, which is being supported by leading British pig and poultry feed manufacturer ABN, will be reminded to look out for the Red Tractor logo to make sure they are buying quality assured food produced to high, independently inspected, standards. They will also be able to pick up free recipe booklets and stickers as well as enter a competition to win a turkey. Paul Kelly said: “A locally produced turkey is the key ingredient for any Christmas dinner and there are turkey producers across the UK who can provide you with just what you need for a festive family feast. Anyone looking for a locally produced turkey should visit the UK Turkeys website to find a producer in their area.” Sarah Pettitt, chairman of the NFU’s board for horticulture and potatoes, said: “Christmas is a great time to support British farmers and growers by buying seasonal vegetables as well as meat and poultry. British growers produce some of the highest quality vegetables and fruit in the world and there’s nothing healthier and more nutritious than fresh locally grown sprouts, carrots and potatoes to accompany your turkey on Christmas Day.” Nigel Lee, from ABN, said: “British pork and poultry farmers are some of the most conscientious people in the food chain, producing meat to an extremely high standard under excellent welfare conditions. A large number of our customers are farm assured and I would highly recommend all consumers look for the Red Tractor logo or other quality mark to ensure their Christmas dinner is the best they can buy.” Notes to editors: 1.
