Imported food was blamed for rising food prices in the UK according to an article in the Daily Telegraph on Thursday November 3 2011. This letter was sent in response.
Sir The link between Britain’s high level of food imports and the high rate of food price inflation (Daily Telegraph, Food price rises second steepest in EU, November 3, 2011) has an obvious moral: we should be growing more food at home. Increasing farm output is the best way of ensuring a secure supply of affordable food. It should be an explicit aim of national policy. However, I do have good news on that score. The latest NFU survey of our members’ farming intentions indicates that almost half are planning to increase production over the next five years. Provided that regulations don’t get in the way, in time, this will inevitably keep food inflation under control. NFU President Peter Kendall
