Letter to Farmers Weekly

12 Dec 2011

Sir,

Peter Kendall's intention is mis-understood ('Work together to reform CAP for all', FW, 9th December). It is definitely not to create a schism between farmers and environmentalists, nor to deny the specific biodiversity challenges, but to highlight the immediate crisis in agricultural productivity.

Reduced fertiliser and pesticide usage, improvements in water quality, some 70% of farmland in agri-environment schemes and farmers' involvement in initiatives such as the CFE, show signs that we are, at least, heading in the right direction on the environment.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the challenge to increase food production. Farmers are being asked to deliver a 70% increase in food production by 2040 but globally and domestically we are nowhere near on track. If agricultural productivity is no better in 40 (30?) years’ time than today we will be in serious trouble.

Without a doubt, the NFU agrees that food production and the environment must go hand in hand - this message has been central to our slogan "produce more, impact less" - but much greater attention needs to be focused on our agricultural productivity than has been done to date.

Dr Diane Mitchell
NFU chief environment adviser
