Letter to Farmers Weekly on lobbying groups

28 Nov 2011

The following letter has been sent to Farmers Weekly following its article on lobbying and campaigning groups involved with agriculture.

Sir,
Farmers Weekly’s profile of the 20 most influential pressure groups highlights how open, fluid and diverse policy making in agriculture has become over the past decade (‘Farming Under Fire’, November 25). While this presents challenges for farming interest groups like the NFU, it also creates opportunities to find new alliances.
The views of farming organisations seeking to champion a modern, productive and sustainable sector are not always incompatible with those of some NGOs as discussions we’ve had recently with the WWF, Traidcraft and Oxfam demonstrate.
To be effective as a lobby group, the NFU needs to ensure it’s on the ball when it comes to social media and other new lobbying vehicles. However, the most important ingredients will remain the ability to speak on behalf of a strong growing membership and having a compelling, evidenced and articulate message about why farming matters.
Thomas Hind
NFU director of corporate affairs
