Defra has published its revised National Parks and Broads Circular and Vision Statement, setting out its priorities for around 11% of the country’s land over the next five years.
Members can see what we thought of the document in an NFU briefing, which you can read by clicking on the link to the right of the page.
Our comments on the draft circular, issued at the start of the year, included the following points:
- The publication of the Food 2030 policy statement marked an incremental shift in the value of domestic food production and the circular must also reflect this key change in government policy.
- Working with farmers and farming organizations is critical to the success of many of the government priorities set out within the circular and greater recognition of this must be made.
- It is very important for the park boards to appoint people who are representative of the rural economy. Although agriculture may be the largest land user in National Parks, it is not always adequately represented.
