Initial prospects for spray irrigation in the Anglian water region this summer are poor, according to an Environment Agency forecast released this week.
The briefing says water levels are well below average in many rivers and aquifers. This winter is currently the driest on record across the region and there is an ‘exceptionally high soil moisture deficit’.
The document continues: ‘As a result without above average rainfall for the remaining winter and early spring period, significant restrictions on abstraction for spray irrigation from surface water are probable and we may have to restrict abstraction from groundwater.'
