Ian Backhouse, the NFU’s North East Combinable Crops Board chairman, was today elected as chairman of the organisation’s national Combinable Crops Board for a second term in office.
Mark Leggott, representing the East Midlands, was elected vice chairman. Both will serve a two-year term.
Mr Backhouse said: “I intend to build now on the good work with our customers, in particular moving to secure a means for sharing information up and down the supply chain to the benefit of farmers and our customers. I will be pressing for a worthwhile and workable CAP reform in the UK and Brussels as well as the implementation of the Renewable Energy Directive, protection of farmers’ rights and investment in plant breeding in any new proposals for seeds legislation. I am delighted with the result and look forward to working with Mark and the Board.”
Mr Leggott said: “There are a number of challenges ahead in looking forward to a vibrant viable future in a profitable combinable crops sector including the Sustainable Use Directive and Water Framework Directive. I plan on working hard to get the best result for our sector on renewables, particularly British sourced biofuel and biomass as an essential and increasingly important part of agriculture.”
