Concerns about Chinese lanterns were highlighted in the House of Commons today when the Conservative MP for South Norfolk, Richard Bacon, raised the issue during Prime Minister’s Questions.
Echoing the thoughts of farmers across the UK, Mr Bacon spoke both of the fire risks posed by the lanterns and of the danger they can present to livestock if ingested. The NFU had previously briefed the MP, sharing your experiences and providing details of our campaign for an outright ban.
Responding in place of the Prime Minister, Deputy PM Nick Clegg acknowledged that there are serious concerns about lanterns. He said that the government did not yet accept the case for an outright ban, he made it clear that it is working with the industry to improve designs, as well as to ensure that information is provided on how to use lanterns safely.
NFU comment
NFU government affairs adviser Nick Von Westenholz said: “It is reassuring to know that the highest levels of government are aware of the problems Chinese lanterns pose. We will continue to press for a ban, while working with industry, event venues and the public to minimise the risks they pose while their use remains lawful.”
