Defra has announced the first non-executive members of its new Animal Health and Welfare Board.
They are: Stewart Houston, chairman of the British Pig Executive; Tim Morris, director of the Department for Equine Science and Welfare at the British Horse-racing Authority; Stuart Roberts, Agriculture and Livestock Director at Anglo Beef Processors and Mark Tufnell, a farmer from the Cotswolds, trained as a chartered accountant and tax adviser.
The board is chaired by Michael Seals and a first meeting is expected on November 8. It was unveiled in April and will make policy recommendations affecting the health and welfare of kept animals, including farm animals, horses and pets.
NFU President Peter Kendall said: “The board has a big job and big responsibilities. The NFU will take great interest in its work plan and will use every opportunity to ensure that industry views are not only heard, but also included in future policy-making.
“We will continue to hold government to account on issues of animal health and welfare and the way they are funded.”
The farming minister, Jim Paice, said: “Farmers, veterinarians and animal keepers have a wealth of experience and knowledge. We are bringing them to the heart of government to advise on the policies that affect them, and ensure good animal welfare standards.
