Until now the UK’s current regulatory system did not allow the approval of products with buffer zones wider than 5m. This meant that Chemical Regulation Directorate (CRD) had no option but to refuse to register products that could have been used if they had a wider buffer zone. The new arrangements allow a buffer zone of up to 20m. Other European countries have already been able to have 20m buffer zones, thus giving their growers access to a wider range of chemistry and putting British growers at a disadvantage. These new more flexible buffer zone arrangements mean that British growers may have access to a wider range of chemistry for weed, pest and disease control.
