Last week at Cereals 2010, NFU Vice President Gwyn Jones urged the new coalition Government to practice what they preached in opposition and support voluntary measures to implement the Sustainable Use Directive rather than burden farmers with additional further legislation.
Speaking at a Crop Protection Crunch event on the NFU stand he urged the Government to avoid gold plating and use existing schemes which have already been widely adopted voluntarily by farmers In addition he said it was vital that any flexibility within the new Registration Regulation 1107/2009 such as derogations allowing pesticides to stay on the market in the absence of alternatives were used by the UK to support British farmers who had already lost large numbers of important pesticides.
Meanwhile we continue to be heavily involved in the development of the new legislation and this week attended a meeting of the informal expert group of Opera (Observatory on Pesticide and Risk Analysis ) to present NFU views on how the Directive should be implemented and learn what is happening in other Member States.
