Have you ever been offered a second opinion or a referral to a ‘specialist’ vet, or someone who is an expert in a particular field of veterinary medicine?
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons has been looking into the whole issue of what gives a vet the right to call himself a ‘specialist’. Is it achieving certain post graduate qualifications, levels of clinical experience or is it about peer recognition? At the moment, it could be any of these things.
All have been perfectly adequate routes of recognition up to now, but they don’t make for a very transparent system and are not reflective of a modern and forward-looking profession.
The NFU has responded to an RCVS consultation which sought ideas about recognising and managing veterinary specialisations. On the whole, we feel that the RCVS proposals are appropriate to take the profession forward. Read our response here.
