The House of Lords’, European Committee has launched an inquiry into the Commission’s proposals for the European Budget. The NFU has submitted written evidence which stresses the importance of maintaining an EU-led approach to agricultural policy through the CAP. Attempts to renationalise the CAP and its budget would open up significant distortions in the way that farming is supported across the EU, which would be detrimental to the single market. The NFU believes that whatever the size of the final budget allocation, fair and equitable treatment for British farmers is vital. In this regards the absolute priority for the UK government negotiations on CAP and the CAP budget must be ensuring that the UK receives a fair share of EU funding for both pillar 1 and pillar 2 of the CAP.
