This document summarises a recent report commissioned by Defra to look at efficiency at farm level over the period 1989 to 2008. The Defra report is part of an on going area of work in Defra under the wider subject of competitiveness and resilience. We consider two parts of the report, firstly the farm level factors which determine efficiency, and, how efficiency in the UK compares with that in other EU countries.
