The Adaptation Sub-Committee (ASC) has published its second assessment of how well prepared the UK is for climate change. The report focuses on three of the priority areas identified in its first report - land use planning, managing water resources, and designing and renovating buildings.
The main messages are that
- the UK is coping with the current climate, but some sectors such as water supply are near their limits.
- there are low-regret actions that could be taken now to reduce vulnerability e.g. measures to improve water efficiency.
- climate risks appear not to be fully incorporated into some major strategic decisions, such as land use planning and investment in water infrastructure
Agriculture barely gets a mention other than the Committee's recognition that there will be potential opportunities “for some types of farming”. For more NFU analysis read the document on the right hand side of this page.
