In February 2010, the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) published its figures for the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2008 and the performance of various sectors including agriculture.
From 1990 to 2008:
- Total UK emissions have fallen by 19% whereas emissions from agriculture have fallen by 21%
- Agricultural nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions have fallen by 23%, mainly due to decreased fertiliser use since the late nineties
- Methane (CH4) emissions from agriculture have declined by 18%
- Agriculture accounts for less than 1% of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK.
Agriculture’s share of greenhouse gas emissions has remained unchanged at around 7%. The industry produces about two thirds of the UK’s N2O emissions and is the second largest source of CH4 after landfill.
