NFU comments on the draft EU guidance document for IPPC units

24 May 2011

The NFU has submitted more than 100 comments on the first version of a re-drafted EU guidance note for IPPC Pig and Poultry units (the ‘BREF’).

The BREF document is recognized as the European standard for IPPC type pig and poultry units and forms the basis for much of the Environment Agency guidance produced in England and Wales. Importantly, the BREF sets out Best Available Techniques.

Our comments focused on updating supporting data and information on candidate BATs in order to properly represent UK techniques and systems.

The NFU represents the European farmers’ organisation COPA on a Technical Working Group feeding into the revisions on the BREF. Our involvement is critical, since recent changes in the Industrial Emissions Directive now means that member states have less flexibility to deviate from any BAT conclusions outlined in the finalized BREF document.

A second draft BREF is expected to be available for comment by the end of the year.
