Beat the NVZ derogation deadline - briefing

Related Documents
18 Mar 2010

Those in NVZs have until March 31 to apply for a derogation allowing whole farm average manure rates 50% above the normal limit.

And to help smooth the process, we've published a new briefing, which NFU members can read by clicking on the document link to the right of the page.

Cow-184275The move is likely to be of interest to more highly stocked dairy farmers, and perhaps some beef farmers. To qualify, farmers must have 80% of the farm in grass or under crops undersown with grass in 2010. They must have a whole farm stocking rate equivalent to no more than 250 kg/N ha (about 1 dairy cow/acre) and they must also comply with a number of conditions in addition to the normal NVZ rules.

Those with higher stocking rates, who do not get a derogation, will need to reduce numbers, increase the area of land they control or export manure

The full details are set out in Defra’s new NVZ guidance booklet 5a, which you can download here.

Remember, to take advantage, you must register before the end of the month.

Applications to the Environment Agency can be by phone, online or on paper and must be renewed annually. The agency’s special derogation line is on 0845 603 3113 and is manned Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Phone and online applications will receive an instant decision. Full details can be found in the Defra booklet.
