Thousands of farmers are expected at the Malvern Showground in Worcestershire next week (February 15/16) for the third Energy Now Expo.
The two-day show is a renewable energy event targeted at farmers and landowners, and NFU members are entitled to discounted entry, saving £20 on a £99 ticket (includes lunch and access to all presentations, debates and the exhibition).
Despite the recent legal challenge to proposed changes to the level of Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) for solar PV, renewable energy remains one of the best choices for farmers and landowners looking to diversify their business.
With the cost of energy rising and many observers warning about the damaging effect of fossil fuels on the world's climate, adopting renewable alternatives will allow farmers to offset costs and reduce their carbon footprints.
These benefits, plus the additional income from the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and FiTs, and from selling excess energy back to the National Grid, make renewable energy a shrewd investment.
Since April 2010, electricity generation from wind, solar, hydro and biogas has been supported by FITs. The RHI now offers payments for heating your properties or businesses with renewable resources.
Biomass boilers, heat pumps, solar thermal systems and the heat generated by biogas from anaerobic digesters are all supported under the RIll, which is the first scheme of its kind in the world and provides a 20-year payment for every unit of heat generated by renewable heating systems.
Energy Now Expo is being held in association with the NFU and CLA and is sponsored by NatWest and supported by leading organisations including the RASE, BRA and Anglia Farmers.
The event includes an exhibition with more than 120 suppliers and a two-day conference, featuring specialists discussing the latest developments affecting the sector, the technologies and their viability. Conference chairmen include the NFU's renewable energy adviser Dr Jonathan Scurlock.
