The NFU’s chief environment adviser has appeared before a Select Committee inquiry into the Natural Environment White Paper.
Diane Mitchell told MPs that one of the key commitments from our perspective is the effective drawing together of organisations, industry and government to achieve Defra’s twin objectives - producing more sustainable food and protecting and enhancing the environment.
She welcomed work to that end as part of the Green Food Project but added that meeting Defra’s vision would require “a transformation in farming techniques, substantial investment in research and knowledge transfer and investment on farms.” The NFU provided written evidence last year.
CAP considerations and the timetable for a proposed phase-out of peat, which we've criticised as ‘unachievable’, were also discussed.
