Currently central government publishes an extensive range of planning guidance mainly in Planning Policy Statements. There are twenty five different documents covering topics such as housing, transport, heritage and rural policy.
These are supplemented by other technical documents and planning circulars. Depending on which documents you include the government claim there are between 1,000 and 3,000 pages of advice. They intend to scrap all these documents and replace it with one short simple National Planning Policy Framework.
This is part of the localism agenda giving local authorities and communities much more freedom on how to implement the Coalition government's policies. Greg Clarke the minister responsible for the National Planning Policy Framework invited submissions from organisations and individuals on what priorities should be included in the document.
It is clear the government are determined to keep the document as short as possible. The NFU have submitted their response which highlights the key requirements of the farming industry. A link to this document is on the right hand side of this page.
