The NFU has praised a decision by a Kent local authority to grant retrospective planning permission for polytunnels.
A planning meeting by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, held on 12 July, was attended by the NFU's South East Land Use Adviser, John Archer.
The meeting considered an application by Hugh Lowe Farms for polytunnels at its site known as Barons Place Farm, hearing from both supporters, such as the NFU, and objectors.
Mr Archer said: “This was a victory for common sense. The Council allowed for a balanced debate and made a sensible decision. It took into account environmental concerns and grasped the importance of food production, recognising that farmers shape and manage the Kent countryside. Polytunnels are part of the evolution of farming in the Garden of England and they are now very much part of its landscape.”
Polytunnels allow growers to extend the season for soft fruit, providing quality berries for consumers at affordable prices, and minimising environmental impacts. The soft fruit industry is the fastest growing sector within horticulture.
