The NFU proposed in 2008 that the government should set a national target for 1000 farm-based AD plants by 2020, delivering multiple environmental benefits - together with around 200 larger waste-linked AD facilities.
Together, these AD plants could comprise 800 MW of electrical generating capacity, supplying about 6 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity and potentially another 6 TWh of heat - about 4.5% of the UK's renewable energy target.
This NFU briefing and Vision for 1000 AD plants using farm feedstocks was instrumental in Defra launching its own Vision Statement "Anaerobic Digestion - Shared Goals" in February 2009.
