Working with Soil Scheme launched
The British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) launched the first phase of Institute of Professional Soil Scientists (IPSS)’s Working with Soil initiative.
Eight documents have been produced which detail the skills and competencies that soil science practitioners should have gained before undertaking professional work in various aspects of soil science. These include:
- Foundation skills in field soil investigation, description and interpretation;
- Agricultural Land Classification;
- Integrated soil and water management;
- Soil handling and restoration;
- Land evaluation and planning;
- Establishment, management and/or conservation of natural habitats and ecosystems;
- Application of organic materials to land;
- Landscape design and construction.
The Working with Soil documents can be downloaded at www.soilscientist.org/workingwithsoil.
The IPSS plans to expand the scheme and to develop a tailored training programme for those wishing to achieve the various standards.
