Workshops on sustainable soil management

04 May 2010
With increasing fertilizer costs and tougher legislation over nitrate pollution, green manures are set to play an important role in the future of soil fertility on both organic and conventional farms.

Garden Organic (formerly HDRA) has conducted over 15 years of research on green manures, and we will be drawing on this expertise. These two workshops are suitable both for people unfamiliar with green manures, or those already using them who would like to refine their management. It should answer many of the questions farmers and growers are asking, such as:

· Which type and variety is best to use?

· How can the nutrients be targeted to the next crop?

· How can I prevent leaching of nutrients?

· What are the options for using green manures in environmental stewardship schemes?

· What are the future environmental and financial implications of their use?

This work is funded by Landskills West Midlands, managed by Lantra on behalf of Advantage West Midlands as part of the Rural Development Programme (RDPE). RDPE is funded by Defra and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
