The NFU has responded to the joint Defra and Welsh Assembly Government consultation which explores the possibility of introducing a ban or restrictions on the landfilling of the following wastes:
- Paper/card
- Food
- Textiles
- Metals
- Wood
- Green (garden) waste
- Waste electronic equipment
- Biodegradable wastes (food)
The NFU position is that while we are not in principle against the idea of a ban, we feel it is too early to consider a complete ban in the immediate future due to the following reasons:
- Existing mechanisms such as the increasing landfill tax, producer responsibility agreements and voluntary industry initiatives should be given more time to work;
- Concern about lack of affordable & accessible facilities for treating farm wastes in the event of a ban;
- The knock-on effect than a ban could have on levels of fly-tipping on farmland;
- The costs of enforcing compliance of any ban;
