What's going on with Waste Exemptions?

16 Jan 2012

tick-box275184Information on the Waste Exemption Transition

Waste exemptions cover "low risk" waste activities, many of which occur routinely on-farm.  Most farmers will have at least one waste exemption registered with the Environment Agency.  If registered before the 6th April 2010, your exemption will have been under the old system i.e. "Paragraph 15" exemption for the benficial use of waste (e.g. as animal bedding).

New exemptions registered from 6th April 2010 onwards are under a new system i.e. "U8" exemption for use of waste for a specified purpose (includes use as animal bedding).

There are transitional arrangements for those registered under the old system, with all old exemptions coming to an end by 1 October 2013 although some (i.e. those for activities where non-agricultural wastes are used on farm) will be required to move sooner than this.

NFU Members can read a short update on the current situation, and read guidance on what they need to do, by viewing the NFU Briefing available under "Related Documents".  Further, detailed information is available on the EA website (see "Related Links") or by downloading NFU Business Guide 822 by logging in to myNFU.

My recent experience indicates that local EA enforcement officers have no knowledge of registrations already made
