The Environment Agency (EA) has announced that Defra will review the need for small discharges of domestic sewage to be registered.
The review applies only to England - not Wales - and will include a public consultation in a few weeks. The NFU understands that the purpose is to assess whether the registration process could be simplified.
Accordingly, while the review is in progress the EA will not require operators of small domestic sewage discharges to register provided certain requirements are complied with.
More details on the requirements that have to be met are available in an updated NFU briefing dated 26th August, provided to the right of this page, or in the EA Regulatory Position Statement 116, entitled The registration of small sewage discharges in England.
The NFU is seeking information from Defra and EA on the Source Protection Zone aspect of the requirements, as explained in the briefing. We will provide further information when this is available.
We are in close touch with Defra and the EA and are keen to see further simplification of the registration process, and a better and clearer strategy of communication and engagement with those affected.

What about the private houses that leak sewage onto farm land? The authorities have turned a blind eye to this problem on my property for the last 14 years. EA Ever Absent.

They would be better if they concentrated on getting the sweage works working properly not as now poluting the rivers and blaming it on the farmers. The enviroment agency is not interested here I have complained about the local sewage works for years but they are not interested.
