Our environment team has published an updated briefing looking at the longer-term implications of the lengthy dry spell earlier in the year.
The key message is that a large area of central England, stretching from the Welsh borders to the Wash, received only 60-70% of average rainfall during the past 12 months, despite the wetter weather of recent weeks. Without a substantial 'topping-up' of resources this winter, there could be real implications for crop production next year.
The NFU is therefore recommending that members actively review their needs over the winter.
