In a formal letter, the NFU has asked farming minister Jim Paice to explain why there has been such a delay in getting the new Government Buying Standards for food launched.
After extensive consultation the standards, that will be mandatory for all Central Government departments, were due to come into force in March 2011. It had been hoped that Defra would take on board the advice of the NFU and stipulate the use of Red Tractor assured product as a minimum standard for all food procured by Central government.
Red Tractor assurance offers the caterers and procurement managers a simple and well recognised solution when having to demonstrate value for money in procurement against a backdrop of concerns over food security, sustainability. Red Tractor also offers the procurement managers knowledge that animal welfare and Environmental control are strictly adhered to.
The concept of mandating food procurement standards had been well received by all interested parties, so it disappointing that there is such a delay in getting these standards published.
