SALSA (Safe and Local Supplier Approval) was launched in March 2007 as a non-profit making organisation and is now recognised as a Food Safety certification scheme for small, local and niche suppliers - however it offers far more to suppliers and buyers than just the guarantee of product safety and quality assurance.
If you are a supplier being a member of the SALSA accreditation scheme provides you with the opportunity to launch your local food business into a wider market place. It puts buyers on contact with local and regional suppliers. The SALSA directory of suppliers can be accessed via the SALSA website. This is used as a sourcing tool by national and regional buyers who can be sure that companies listed meet their required food safety standards and enables them to meet their local and regional sourcing targets. The directory can be searched by region then by business name, county or product sector.
So what's stopping you?
If you are a small local supplier and you haven't signed up to SALSA what's stopping you? For many small businesses the whole auditing process can seem quite daunting, especially if this is something you may not have been involved with before so it's worth knowing that there is help at hand!
If you register to become SALSA approved you will have access to professionally qualified and trained mentors who can advise and support you during your approval process, helping to ensure that you are compliant before your audit. The mentoring service, although not provided free of charge is available at favourable rates for SALSA members.
