Food producers and suppliers will get an extraordinary opportunity to showcase the best of British to the Olympic organising committee.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has announced it will be bringing its sourcing team and development chefs to two events taking place in coming months.
The team will be at the Speciality & Fine Food Fair 2010 in September and at IFE 11 in March next year.
Some 14 million meals are expected to be served at the 2012 games, and LOCOG will be on the lookout for outstanding produce. Head of catering, Jan Matthews, said the shows would be 'key to developing the catering offering', adding that quality local and regional produce from around the UK would be particularly valued.
NFU head of food chain Lee Woodger said: “We hope many producers and suppliers will take advantage of this once-in-a lifetime opportunity to showcase the best of British on the world stage and would encourage everyone at the shows to present to LOCOG.
“The NFU has been working closely with the London 2012 organisers - who have already committed to ensuring that the majority of the food used will be Red Tractor assured - to make sure that UK farmers and growers can play their part in this major sporting event.”
