The NFU is urging the organisers of the next Commonwealth Games to step up to the gold standard set by the London 2012 Olympics and ensure that the majority of food is UK Red Tractor assured.
Adopting the ‘Food Vision’ for Glasgow 2014 would mean that farmers and growers from the four home nations would supply all the meat, cheese and dairy products, eggs, fruit, veg, salads and cereals, wherever it is seasonally or realistically possible. The 2012 food standards have already been backed by other large scale catering organisations, with the Greater London Authority vowing to use them as part of its own sustainability programme from 2012.
NFU President Peter Kendall said: “While large scale catering is a complex business, the London Olympics is a working example of how to provide the most sustainable games in history.
“We urge the organisers of Glasgow 2014 to also adopt this template, as they will not just be backing farmers and growers from the home nations but also ensuring that the food served is of high quality, produced to strict standards from farm to venue and fully traceable.
“The existence of the 2012 Food Vision is a huge advantage for the organisers of Glasgow 2014. We’ve already seen the Greater London Authority sign up to begin to secure an Olympic food legacy and believe that Glasgow 2014 should be the start of the food legacy for Scotland.”
