Farmers have been sent a step-by-step handbook ahead of the launch of a new, single-page cattle passport next month.
The British Cattle Movement Service document was sent to all keepers and anyone who hasn’t received the information is urged to contact the BCMS using the numbers at the bottom of the page.
The NFU is stressing that farmers should read the handbook carefully, as failure to comply with the rules can lead to cross compliance breaches and a reduction in support payments.
The changes are being introduced as other options for cattle reporting - CTS Online, the self-service phone line and computer software - have proved increasingly popular in recent months. More than 80% of transactions are now reported electronically (more here).
This move means the BCMS will no longer be supplying movement cards and keepers that currently report movements using paper will need to find alternative methods. Among those, the self-service telephone line may prove helpful for those without broadband internet access.
Current cheque book-style and old blue/green passports will stay in circulation and will be replaced with new-style documents if returned for re-issue or amendment. There is no need to send them back.
