Proposed changes to NVZ rules

09 Jan 2012

NFU members in East Anglia are being invited to a meeting in Newmarket on the 13th of February to hear more about proposed changes to NVZ rules which will affect how farmers use manure, slurries and other fertilisers.  The changes, which are the subject of a three month consultation, are due to come into force in 2013.  The meeting will give farmers the opportunity to comment on the proposals and influence how the NFU responds to the consultation.

A briefing on the proposals can be found on the NFU website.  While the changes don’t appear to be as onerous as they were in the last review in 2009 there are still a number of proposals which could cause problems.  Proposals include modifying NMax calculations to include nitrogen from compost, sewage sludge and other materials, increasing livestock manure N efficiency in NMax calculations and increasing the organic manure N field limit for composts.

Other proposed changes relate to the grassland derogation for farms with grazing livestock, extending the closed period for N applications, changes to record keeping and the use of cover crops on light land which is bare in the autumn.

NFU members are invited to comment on the proposals which can be found on the NFU website.  Members attending the meeting will get the chance to hear more in detail about the proposed changes and make their views heard.  The meeting will be held at the NFU office in Newmarket (CB8 7SN) on the 13th of February from 2pm – 5pm.  Please call 01638 672100 or email meetingsea@nfu.org.uk to register your place.
