Two Essex MPs are joining farmers on Friday (20 January) to enjoy a tasty start to Farmhouse Breakfast Week.
MPs Brooks Newmark and Priti Patel will be sitting down with NFU members from their constituencies for a special breakfast meeting in the restaurant at Greenstead Farm, Greenstead Green near Earls Colne.
Members from two NFU branches – Braintree and Colchester – will be enjoying a locally-sourced breakfast with the MPs before raising key topics including water resources and farm regulation.
NFU Braintree group secretary Rob Morrell said: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day - and we’ll be making the most of this one by enjoying local food and discussing vital farming issues with our MPs in an informal setting.”
Farmer Chris Butler, who owns and runs Greenstead Farm, said: “This is an excellent way to mark the start of Farmhouse Breakfast Week.
“We will be serving sausages and bacon from Wicks Manor, free-range eggs from local producer Bill Rhodes and apple juice supplied by White’s Farm, White Colne.”
Farmhouse Breakfast Week is an annual event organised by the HGCA (the cereals and oilseeds division of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board) and supported by the NFU.
This year’s theme is Shake Up Your Wake Up, with the HGCA stressing that:
• Breakfast eaters tend to be slimmer than breakfast skippers
• Eating breakfast aids concentration and mental performance
• It provides you with the nutrients and energy needed for an active lifestyle
• Research shows that breakfast eaters are less depressed and have lower levels of stress than breakfast skippers.
Greenstead Farm will continue to celebrate the event by offering full English breakfasts during the week, with a special guided welly walk around the farm on Sunday 22 and Sunday 29 January.
After the walk, visitors will be able to take part in a scarecrow-making competition, with the best entries then going out in the fields to help protect this year’s crops.
