With the red meat sector finally enjoying better prices over the last year compared to what has been a very bad run, the question all livestock farmers are asking is whether higher prices can be maintained.
This will be the subject of the NFU’s next regional livestock board meeting when the guest speaker will be EBLEX market specialist Jonathan Eckley.
Jonathan will provide a detailed economic outlook for both cattle and sheep, exploring the latest available data on prices, domestic supply and import/export data from HM Customs and Excise.
He will also be looking at global supply trends, reviewing the situation across the EU and further afield – for example South America – as well as looking at what is predicted for the year ahead
Livestock board chairman Hans Pörksen says the meeting offers a great opportunity to gain an in-depth analysis of how the red meat sector is looking in the short to medium term.
“We have all seen better prices recently, albeit with cattle prices easing off over the last few weeks. Looking ahead though it’s important to understand the different pressures that can and will affect us and I hope Jonathan can provide us with some useful insights.”
Also on the agenda for the meeting will be the latest Defra consultation on proposals to simplify livestock movement rules. The NFU is anxious to hear members views before submitting a formal response.
The meeting will take place on Thursday 3 June 2010 at the Knowesgate Inn, Kirkwelpington in Northumberland. Proceedings will get underway at 7.30pm and all NFU members are welcome.
