The NFU team in the North East has launched a new regional information service on the social networking site Twitter.
Aimed at keeping farmers and growers, decision makers and regional media up to date with the latest news, the service will also provide an insight into the day-to-day work of the NFU – its lobbying activity, campaigning work and media appearances.
To achieve this six professional staff based at Regional Office will be participating - Regional Director Barney Kay plus advisers covering the livestock, dairy, poultry, crops, horticulture, potatoes and sugar beet sectors, as well as the environment and land use, public relations and campaigns.
In its first week, NFU North East ‘tweets’ highlighted ongoing collaboration with Durham Police to tackle the rising problem of metal thefts, how Yorkshire farmers are getting involved in the new Ladies in Beef campaign and the educational workshops provided for children visiting the popular Countryside Live event.
“This is a new departure for us but we hope it will prove a useful addition to those members who regularly use Twitter,” said Regional Director Barney Kay.
“The beauty of Twitter is that in just a few moments we can send useful nuggets of information out to our members – direct to their phone or computer. This could be breaking news such as a disease outbreak or weather warning or commentary from meetings or events as they happen.
“Next week for example, NFU President Peter Kendall will be in the region to discuss the latest CAP reform proposals and we aim to provide Twitter coverage of the main points raised, for those members that cannot attend.”
The regional service has been launched following the success of the main NFU Twitter presence launched nationally two years ago. This now has more than 2,500 followers from farmer and grower members to MPs and MEPs.
“The challenge is to spread the word and encourage as many members as possible to get involved,” added Barney Key.
“Undoubtedly there are increasing numbers of farmers on Twitter as smartphones become an important business tool. We hope to offer a useful service for current advocates and encourage those who haven’t yet tried it to give it a go.”
