A family of four from Selby will be enjoying a feast of British produce this week after winning a hamper of Red Tractor produce as part of celebrations for the food assurance scheme’s 10th birthday.
The Red Tractor logo now features on £10 billion worth of food and drink products, everything from meat, fruit and vegetables to milk, cream and cheese – even beer. Its success over the last decade has brought together everyone involved in the food industry from farmers to retailers, providing shoppers with a unique assurance of quality and provenance.
To help celebrate the 10-year milestone, the North East NFU organised the hamper competition, asking people to say why it is important for shoppers to support British food producers.
The Hancock family (pictured right) from Selby entered on Open Farm Sunday at an event held at Stockbridge Technology Centre, Cawood. Their declaration that people should buy British because ‘not only does it taste better, it supports farmers and the local economy’ immediately caught the judge’s eye.
“Mr Hancock summed up very neatly what many people said as part of the competition,” said NFU Regional Director Richard Ellison.
“Of course food is all about taste, but increasingly people want to know where their food comes from and how it is produced. The Red Tractor logo gives people peace of mind that what they are buying is produced in Britain and to the highest standards. People tell us again and again that is what they want.”
Delighted to have won, Mr Neil Hancock said he had never won anything before. “We take a real interest in what we eat and have even started growing some produce ourselves,” he said. “This hamper is full of lots of lovely fresh produce and we can’t wait to tuck in.”
