Pupils make brilliant bangers for farmhouse breakfast week

25 Jan 2012
Shropshire primary pupils munched their way through hundreds of brilliant bangers to show their support for farmhouse breakfast week.

The pupils from Wombridge Primary School, in Oakengates, honed their culinary skills when they teamed up with the farming community to make succulent sausages for the week-long event. Around 500 sausages were made on Tuesday and these were then served with pitta bread and relish to the children and staff today (Jan 25) as part of the week long campaign.

The breakfast week, supported by the National Farmers’ Union and Farming and Countryside Education charity, FACE, aims to raise awareness of the benefits of eating breakfast and to showcase the variety of breakfast foods available.

Wombridge Primary has developed strong links with the farming community and FACE co-ordinator Brian Hainsworth has been working with staff in a bid to help reconnect the children with food, farming and the countryside.

Last year the pupils went to see farmer Derek Harper, at Leighton, near Shrewsbury, where a chef cooked for them using regional ingredients and food produced on the farm.

The children have also worked on projects in class and have designed their own Shropshire food and farming logos.

At the breakfast event Mr Hainsworth, of Oswestry, said the pupils had thoroughly enjoyed making the sausages and everyone seemed happy with the final results.

He said: “We have been talking with them about where their food comes from and how it’s produced and they have a really good knowledge already.

“I was told by numerous pupils that these were the best sausages they’ve ever tasted.

“Maybe we have a few future master chefs in the making!

“What really impressed me was the amount of pupils who came up to me to thank me and tell me how much fun they were having learning about food and farming.

“Shropshire has great agriculture roots and credentials, there’s a lot to be proud of, so it’s important the next generation knows how their food gets from field to fork.”

His words were echoed by headteacher Neil Satoor who said they were building strong links with farmers and food producers.Pupils at the breakfast event

He said: “I think everyone involved has got a great deal out of the experience which has been both educational and fun.

“What has been really lovely to see is the children welcoming our special guests to the school and working with them over the past few days.

“We are very lucky to have had such great support from Brian and the farming community.”
The Home Grown Cereals Authority, HGCA, runs the breakfast week each year and is challenging people to get stuck into breakfast and see what difference it makes.

This year’s campaign, which runs until January 28, is fronted by celebrity mum of three Melinda Messenger.

Steve Barras, HGCA, business improvement manager, said it was great to see Wombridge Primary School embracing the campaign and finding more out about the food they eat.
