A ground-breaking NIAB project has secured £2.7m of funding to help improve the transfer of plant science from research labs through to commercial markets.
The 'Innovation Farm' has been given a European Regional Development Fund grant, with additional matched funding coming from industry and academic partners.
The £6.8m initiative in Cambridge demonstrates how cutting-edge crop science and genetics can help address major global challenges like food security, climate change, resource conservation and improving health and nutrition.
The site includes an important demonstration facility, allowing visitors to understand the progress taking place to improve the quality and performance of major food crops.
Innovation Farm exhibits in 2011 focused on fibre and oil crops, potato blight resistance, maize diversity, biomass crops, alternative proteins, the Smart Carbohydrate Centre, adaptive wheats and environmental biodiversity.
