School milk got a boost this week when the Dairy Council reported that an overwhelming majority of children now consider it to be a ‘cool’ drink.
Research commissioned to mark today’s World School Milk Day showed that the white stuff has made a comeback across the country, with 75% of 1,000 youngsters aged between six and ten, and between 15 and 18, telling pollsters that milk is officially cool.
Around 65% of 11-14 year olds share the same view and 45% of respondents said they drink at least a glass of milk each day.
And increasingly, it’s flavoured milk that’s getting the thumbs up. Chocolate Milk narrowly pipped plain as the preferred flavour, with 33% to 31% respectively. Strawberry was third with 22%.
The poll was commissioned to celebrate World School Milk Day, an event organised by the United Nations that is celebrated in over 30 countries around the world.
Launched in 2000, the day is used to promote the importance of milk at school in a fun and educational way.
Dairy Council director Dr Judith Bryans said: “It is very encouraging to see how many kids today are drinking and enjoying milk. The overall trends in milk consumption we see now are very positive. Milk plays such an important role in our children’s diets, so it is comforting to see that drinking it is not just something parents make them do, but something they actually enjoy.”
In a separate poll of 1,007 12-20 year olds across the UK, more than 65% agreed that milk is a healthy drink after physical activity such as sport. An impressive 98% said milk was easily available at home.
