The NFU-sponsored winners of the 2011 Ornamental and Nursery Stock Grower of the Year competition - Majestic Trees - have represented the UK at the AIPH Annual Congress in China.
They took on five finalists from around the world for the title of International Grower of the Year, picking up the silver medal and finishing as the top European concern after two days of deliberation and interviews in Xi’an.
Gold went to Bylands Nursery, a large Canadian tree and shrub business that dominates the Canadian nursery industry. Founded in 1954 by an emigrant Dutch nurseryman, it has gone on to become a major player in North America growing 3 million plants per year of over 2,000 varieties on 400 acres.
The five finalists for this year’s International Grower of the Year competition were Denis-Plants BVBA (Belgium), Bylands Nursery (Canada), Ammerlaan the Green Innovator (The Netherlands), Majestic Trees (UK), Taida Horticultural Co Ltd (Taiwan) plus the host nation’s automatic entry, Hongyue (China).
This event was held in conjunction with both the International Horticultural Exposition and the Global Green City Summit, at a newly-built park covering 418 hectares and the adjacent Kempinski Hotel.
Politicians and international experts mixed to consider the feverish pace of the growing nursery industry and landscaping in China.
The International Association of Horticultural Producers is an international organisation dedicated to promoting horticultural producers and orchestrates garden/flora festivals and expositions worldwide.
