The reality of our work

Work-related deaths reported to HSE

Work-related fatalities reportable under RIDDOR1 are updated and published on a monthly basis by the HSE. It is important to note that many of the cases listed are still under investigation, making these statistics a provisional indication of the annual number of fatalities in the workplace* that are subject to revision as more accurate information becomes available. These reportable work-related fatalities can be broken down into provisional numbers per industry (such as agriculture) and can provide an indication of the type of figures to expect in the yearly ‘Fatal injuries in farming, forestry and horticulture’ reports.

Third parties provide this information when notifying these incidents to HSE. Accuracy (eg the name and age of the deceased) is verified when the incident is investigated and as more information becomes available. Although the HSE may have done some validation of the notifier’s information prior to publication, they cannot guarantee the accuracy of all details and therefore apologises to relatives of the deceased should any errors, such as an incorrectly spelt name, cause distress.

1. The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases & Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR)

* Some deaths are excluded from these statistics as they are reportable under other legislation. The main exclusions are as follows:

  1. Fatal accidents involving workers travelling on a public highway (a 'road traffic accident'). Such incidents are enforced by the police and reported to the Department for Transport. Those killed whilst commuting (travelling from home to work, and vice versa) are also excluded.
  2. Fatal accidents involving workers travelling by air or sea. These incidents are the responsibility of the Air Accident Investigation Branch and Marine Accident Investigation Branch, and reported accordingly.
  3. Fatal injuries at work due to 'natural causes', usually heart attacks or strokes, unless brought on by trauma due to the accident.
  4. Accidents to members of the armed forces.
