Dry weather report for March 2017

Potato planting_43198

The seven months from July 2016 to January 2017 were relatively dry and so some rivers, groundwater and public reservoirs are lower than normal for the time of year.

As we move into April, attention is currently focused on the south and east of England.

In summary:

- We have yet to see a recovery in low groundwater levels across Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire areas

-Groundwater levels are lower than expected at this time of year across the North Downs in Kent

-Some rivers across the south east have seen flows decrease in response to a drier than average March

-Rainfall totals for March in south-east England are 68% of the long term average (LTA) and 84% of LTA in eastern England

-The Met Office three month outlook for April to June 2017 signals below average precipitation and above average temperatures being more probable for this period.

Our current view on farming in the south and east is that:

-Farm reservoirs are full

-We have enjoyed perfect soil and weather conditions for spring planting

-Irrigation may begin 2-4 weeks early in some areas

-Farmers are aware of but calm about the current situation. However we will be have a much clearer picture of our sector from late April onwards as crops grow and take up soil moisture.

Key messages

There are currently no environmental or water supply issues as a result of the dry weather, but the Environment Agency is carefully monitoring the situation and will take action to manage any environmental impacts.

Robust and well tested plans are in place to help ensure that, at all times, we make the best use of the water available and minimise the potential impacts to people and the environment.

The Environment Agency will continue to work with farmers, businesses and communities to help reduce water use and is urging everyone to use water wisely.

The Environment Agency is working with partners (including water companies) to try to minimise the potential for impacts to people and the environment.

We are encouraging NFU members to subscribe to Environment Agency publications such as ‘local prospects for irrigation’ and ‘local monthly water situation reports’ to help with forward planning. You can find ‘situation reports’ for your area here
