Firstly that accidents involving moving vehicles are a major cause of injury and death in agriculture. Over the last 10 years accidents involving vehicles are account for almost 30% of fatalities.

Secondly that older farmers and workers figure disproportionally high in accidents. In 2015/2015 almost 50% of those killed on farm were aged 65 and over.

Vehicle best practise is for work on farm to be planned to keep people separate from tractors and other farm vehicles whenever possible but also always to check for bystanders.

Guidance is available from the HSE on:

  • Using tractors safely here
  • Separating passengers and vehicles here

Agriculture is unique as an industry in that many participants work on beyond the retirement age common in other industries. This needs to be recognised and factored in. Caution when working with machines near others is always needed but extra vigilance is required to take account of what might be reduced agility, resilience and reaction times in older farmers and workers.
