Course in Current Research in Crop Protection

Course participants will benefit from a deeper understanding of the research process, a more thorough knowledge of current research in relevant areas and an ability to design and implement research experiments within their own organisations, as well as interpret research results.

Areas covered will include:

  • General Scientific Principles: Statistics in Agricultural Trials, Understanding and Presenting Trials Results and Data and Viruses in Oilseed Rape and Sugar Beet - From Concept to Farming Practice.
  • Weed Science: Weed Agro-ecology, Weed Science Glasshouse and Outdoor Containers Demonstrations, Farm Tour and Weed Control Throughout the Rotation.
  • Plant Pathology and Plant Breeding: GM Crops, Plant Tissue Culture and Genetic Engineering, Disease Detection and Identification, Host Resistance, Plant Immunity, New Threats and Fungicide.
  • Entomology: Aphids as Crop Pests, Detection, Monitoring and Thresholds for Pests, Wheat Blossom Midges, Pollen Beetles, Climate Change and Pest Threats.

The course is based at Rothamsted Research in Hertfordshire and starts in October. It totals 7 days over 5 months. The tuition price of this taught module is available on enquiry and participantscould receive up to 50% of the funding for the tuition fee through the AgriFood Advanced Training Partnership.
